As a revert in Birmigham, I had the most perfect muslamic community. Yes it did feel lonely at times eating iftar alone, but for the most part, I met up with other student and revert friends who didn’t have a family to spend Ramadan with. This meant that unlike the tradition muslim family, I was out breaking my fast at a restaurant almost every night before heading to taraweeh. It was somewhat an ‘unconventioanl’ routine, but I became accustomed to it and even grew to love it.
Things changed when I came to London after I got married. I finally had a muslim family to spend time with over Ramadan, and whilst I can’t get my head around consuming a million fried samosas at iftar time, one thing I have grown to appreciate is simply the company of a family to share this spiritual time of year with.
The way things are today, plenty of young muslims go out to break their fast. Whether it’s just to let mum off from cooking that day, or whether it’s to break fast with friends on the weekend. However, I have found London to not be as accommodating in providing a prayer space as the muslim-run restaurants in Birmingham. In fact, in Birmingham I never once struggled to find a space to pray, be it a small corner or a whole floor. It just came hand in hand: Iftar and maghrib.
I understand that plenty of restaurants simply don’t have the space to accommodate guests for prayer. Some even mention the nearby mosques are sufficient. Although, in all honesty, many of these masjids don’t accommodate women, which can put many in a predicament. I could rant here about how non-nonsensical it is for muslim-run restaurants to provide an ‘iftar menu’ and no prayer space..but I won’t… anyway you get the picture.
Anywho. Intros over. I have compiled a list of places for you to ‘treat yourself’ if you fancy and iftar evening out. I have only included places which have either an in-house prayer space or access to mosques nearby which accommodate men and women. Keep in mind that I haven’t visited all these places so can’t comment on food for all the places features. I also urge you to double check about prayer space availability, and also reserve a table before visiting. Enjoy!
